Sapoho. Lektüren im 18. Jahrhundert

Abstract

Sappho. Reading in the Eighteenth Century

The article proposes a new understanding of Angelica Kauffman’s painting of Sappho, which is often misunderstood as a representation of Sappho's grief for the young sailor Phaon. Instead the author develops a “queer” reading against the background of eighteenth-century debates on female friendship, authorship, Sappho, and Sapphism.
